Extra Time Thriller Ends in a One Goal Loss for Mavericks

18th April 2016

Vitality Netball Superleague

Round 12 : Hertfordshire Mavericks V Team

Hertfordshire Mavericks 54 Team Bath 55

A win today would mean that Mavericks would remain top of the VNSL table. We knew Bath would be determined to turn around their loss against us last time out.

We aimed to start strong, but in fact it was Bath who came out fighting and very determined to set the tone of the match. We struggled to really dominate and ended the first quarter 1 goal down 10-11

Having spoken at quarter time about taking more care of our possession the players responded well. The match was closely contested in the second quarter again with Bath defence causing problems for our attack. We drew the second quarter 10 all making the half time score 20-21 to Bath.

After a strong talk at half time Mavericks put in a good shift with the players making more of the possession they gained from Bath and dominating with great defence work from Carter, May, Guscoth and Keable. We won the third quarter by 3 goals with the lead moving to Mavericks - 34-32.

However Bath refused to collapse and came back hard in the last quarter clawing back the match to a thrilling draw at full time.  The scores were 44-44.  With no draws in the SuperLeague this year we were into extra time! The match remained tight and hard fought, but Bath in the end had the determination to take the win by just one goal. The final score was 55-54

The atmosphere in the Sports Village was amazing and our fans certainly raised the roof with their support.

Sam Bird said " We are clearly frustrated about letting a lead in this match slip to a draw at full time. Bath were very determined today and credit goes to them for their sterling effort away from home. We have two great  games coming up against Storm and Thunder and the players know that we have to take the game to them and fight for every chance and opportunity we get to score. We are looking forward to the challenge that the double header holds versus last years Champions on Saturday and then the league leaders on Monday."
