Match Report | Severn Stars 52 - 62 Saracens Mavericks

21st February 2022

SARACENS MAVERICKS CONTINUED THEIR UNBEATEN START TO THE NEW VITALITY NETBALL SUPERLEAGUE SEASON WITH AN IMPRESSIVE 62-52 WIN AWAY TO SEVERN STARS.

Ine-Mari Venter shone at the University of Worcester Arena, winning player-of-the-match as she hit 49 goals from 52 shots – a 94 per cent shooting average – that led her side to victory and top of the table.

Alongside Sasha and Kadeen Corbin, Venter was part of an impressive attacking trio that combined harmoniously to stretch the Mavs’ lead out to 18 by the end of Q3.

And whilst the Stars fought back to win the final quarter 17-10, it the Mavericks who held on for a  fourth consecutive win of the season.

With the Stars backed by home support for the first time in two years the travelling Mavericks knew they’d need a strong start to silence the crowd – and that’s exactly what they got.

Kat Ratnapala’s side started quickly, breaking the Stars’ first centre pass to take the lead. And despite trailing 8-7 at one point, a series of smart one-twos between the front three brought constant reward with the Mavs moving eight ahead by the end of the quarter.

Q2 continued in similar fashion as the Mavs – led by Venter – shot 35 goals before the interval. Equally key to the success was defensive duo Razia Quashie and Jodie Gibson as their vital interceptions and blocks saw the Mavs momentum continue to secure a 14-goal lead at the break.

Another dominant showing in the third quarter saw the lead stretch to 17 as they moved the ball to Venter with ease and their well-rehearsed combinations began to see the Stars tire.

Although the lead was cut in the fourth quarter, partly due to some unforced errors on the Mav’s part, the game was out of reach for the hosts and Venter took the Mavs past 60 goals for the second time in four matches.

The Mavs will look to continue their fine start to the season on Saturday at home to Manchester Thunder, who had won their opening three rounds.
