Welcome to the Ultimate Netball Club

10th December 2018

The first outing for benecosMavericks in this preseason tri match and first up was Loughborough Lightning and a great opportunity to try out some combinations and test ourselves against the 2019 competition. With some of the squad unavailable for this prearranged fixture, training partner Nicholls & Mavericks U21 Pavelin were brought up for the games after impressing throughout preseason training.

Starting with Fisher, Corbin, Lees, Marshall, Drayne, Keable & Quashie, there was some stability in the defensive end with some skillful play in the attacking end. Fisher and Corbin showing composure at the post and Marshall and Lees connecting well around circle edge. At the end of the first quarter the score was 15 - 9.

With no positional changes to the 2nd quarter, it was a chance for Mavericks to capitalise and build on their first quarter performance and try to clear up some of the misunderstandings. After a slow start, Mavericks stepped it up a gear defensively and found some momentum and took 5 goals in a row home, finishing the 2nd quarter 27-15 (12 - 6). Keable & Quashie finding their form from last season and connecting well in the circle to capitalise on their turnovers.

3rd quarter brought changes to the court with Bailey entering onto GS, Ecuyer-Dale to C, Marshall moving to WD, Nicholls coming onto GD and Keable moving to GK. Corbin and Bailey connecting well in the attacking circle and Keable showing a defensive masterclass and tipping shots for fun.  Quarter 3 saw the score line move out to 42 - 25 (15 - 10).

4th quarter saw Pavelin enter in to GD and Nicholls change to WD. A new defensive unit showed excellent communication and attention to detail, limiting the options and taking their opportunities out on court. Being finished off by outstanding shooting by Bailey scoring 100% of her 15 shots in this quarter. Finishing the game off 59 - 32 (17 - 7)

Head Coach Ratnapala said “It was great to get all 11 players out on court today, I’m really pleased with some of the patches of play. We haven’t had many sessions together due to the International fixtures, so it’s important to take every opportunity to build in these matches. I was particularly impressed with Pavelin and Nicholls who have joined us today for these games. It was great to see Fisher and K Corbin back in black & purple this season and Lees joining us this season and doing a fantastic job out on court. Bailey was also particularly impressive with 100% shooting 26/26. Keable gets my player of the match for her communication and marking of the shot Masterclass.”
