Match report written by Katie Fisher, Mavericks U19 captain.

Mavericks U19 took on Leeds Rhinos in a competitive rematch this weekend, with both teams determined to walk away with the win. We knew it would be a tough game from the very start, but we were ready to take on the challenge and came out fighting.

We started strongly in the first quarter, with the starting 7 of:

GS - Libby Burgess

GA - Eleanor Butt

WA - Abi Watson

C - Bella Baylis

WD - Vicky Booth

GD - Katie Fisher

GK - Aliyah Zaranyika

As a result of an excellent whole team defence and accurate shooting from Burgess and Butt we were behind by only one goal at the interval. The second quarter, however, was not our best play, as the team began to lose some momentum and a few unforced errors occurred. This meant we created a gap between us finishing at half time with the score of 30-20.

Fortunately, we were able to recover in the third corner, challenging Rhinos for every ball. As a team, we were able to fight back from the previously lost quarter resulting in a draw in the third quarter making it 41-31.

In our fourth and final quarter Mavericks came out fighting with great defence from Zaranyika, Patrick and Booth alongside tenacious play from mid-courters Baylis and Knight. Although Mavericks had pulled back and won the final quarter, we weren't able to secure ourselves the win we were hoping for with the final score being 49-40.

All credit to the Rhinos side, who played consistently well throughout. We can now go back to the training courts with new improvements to focus on before our next match where we face Surrey Storm. Well played to everyone, very proud of our resilience and determination even if it wasn't the result we had hoped for.
