Welcome to the Ultimate Netball Club

6th June 2018

Off the back of a confident win vs Dragons at our home venue of HSV, benecosMavericks needed to back up the performance and ensure they kept the points following on the table  to keep them in contention for top 4 finish of the league.

Starting with Bailey, McCollin, Corbin, Marshall, Drayne, Everitt, Keable, Mavericks were off to a strong start with Bailey taking the first goal with a confident display of attacking moves, then with excellent defensive pressure taking an early lead of 7-3 through the work of Keable, Everitt, Drayne and Marshall.

Leading 14 - 9 after the first quarter, Ratnapala was pleased with parts of the game and asked for the squad to take more care of their defensive turnovers, with no changes going into the 2nd quarter, Ratnapala saw the link between Bailey and McCollin build at one end and defensive unit as a back 4 working hard to restrict the Northumbria attackers to 7 goals. Taking 10 out of 11 of their turnovers through to goal and the shooting duo on fire at 95% shooting, Mavericks took an 11 goal run off Northumbria and finished the second quarter 18-7, making the half time score 32 - 16.

Going goal for goal in the 3rd quarter and with countless interceptions by the back 4 defenders, a change was needed in the attacking end and Ratnapala called for Travis to replace McCollin at GA. Showing excellent availability on through court, Travis helped open up the attacking third and Mavericks found some rhythm again. Ending the quarter 13 - 10, it was important for Mavericks to finish off this performance as the final standings of the competition could come down to goal difference.

Final quarter changed Bailey to GA and McCollin off the bench to GS, Corbin, Marshall & Drayne working tirelessly in the midcourt with Corbin and Marshall's quick hands around circle edge. Northumbria were not about to go down without a fight and more changes in their attacking line up meant fresh legs entering the court. A time called and an opportunity for Bailey & McCollin to switch around and Keable to make way for Artman to enter into GK. The game finished with excellent defensive pressure from Artman and Everitt and through court attacking play from Drayne and Marshall, with Bailey finishing with style under the post.

Ratnapala said "It was a lot more consistent game from us today, there were patches of pure world class netball which I hope the fans were excited to watch. There were definitely a few standout performances tonight, McCollin, having shot 91% and Everitt's defensive pressure in and around the circle and Marshall's continued consistency in both attacking and defensive ends was great to see. My player of the match however had to go to Michelle Drayne who worked tirelessly against different opposition and disrupted a lot of Northumbria's attacking play.

With just 5 games left until the 4 top teams play off for the final, the league is really hotting up with 5 teams battling it out to get into the top 4. We are sitting in 4th at the moment with Bath biting at our heels, with just 3 points behind, they are our next opposition on Friday 1st June at 7:30pm in Bath. We're looking for another solid performance from the squad."
